Editor's Review
We’re Impostors: Kill Together, developed by Great Arcade Games, is a unique spin on the social deduction gaming genre. Released on July 1, 2021, this game seemed poised to take the gaming world by storm with its peculiar combination of dark humor, teamwork, and deception. After spending considerable time engulfed in this game’s twisted world, I am proud to present my review of We’re Impostors: Kill Together.
Right from the outset, it’s clear that We’re Impostors: Kill Together isn’t afraid to lean into its darker and more controversial aspects. As the title so aptly puts it, you and your fellow Impostors are charged with working alongside each other, rather than against one another, to eliminate the crew members who seek to complete their tasks in order to survive. This novel approach flips the usual social deduction formula on its head, as it emphasizes betrayal and cunning over altruism and detective work.
For the uninitiated, We’re Impostors: Kill Together is played with a group of eight to ten players, with two to three of these players randomly assigned as Impostors at the start of the game. However, unlike traditional secret identity games like Mafia or Werewolf, the Impostors in We’re Impostors: Kill Together know who their treacherous counterparts are from the beginning. Instead of teasing out allegiances through accusations and deductive reasoning, players must communicate and strategize in secret to pick off crew members one by one without getting caught.
One of We’re Impostors: Kill Together’s standout features is its robust set of gameplay mechanics that facilitate cooperation, deceit, and subterfuge. Impostors have access to unique abilities to manipulate, sabotage, and communicate with their fellow conspirators. For example, Impostors can use the “Telepathy” ability to communicate silently over short distances, making it easier to execute perfectly coordinated attacks, while the “Changeling” ability allows Impostors to momentarily switch places with a crew member, causing chaos and confusion in the process.
These clever mechanics, while relatively simple individually, come together to provide an astoundingly deep and varied gameplay experience. Each round of We’re Impostors: Kill Together feels like a high-stakes chess match where players must perfectly plan moves and responses several steps ahead of time. The ever-present pressure felt as an Impostor is exhilarating, and successfully pulling off a murder is satisfying beyond belief.
Despite the inherent darkness of We’re Impostors: Kill Together’s theme, the game’s art style provides a welcome counterbalance. The character design adopts a cute, cartoony appearance that belies the sinister motives lurking beneath. The various settings that host the action are similarly whimsical, with a mix of bright colors and amusing environmental design choices that keep the game from feeling too oppressive or bleak.
Great Arcade Games deserve commendation for their commitment to updating and improving We’re Impostors: Kill Together. Since its release, there have been numerous patches and updates aimed at balancing the gameplay and squashing any pesky bugs. The developers are also dedicated to engaging with the game’s thriving community on various online forums, which bodes well for the future of We’re Impostors: Kill Together.
If there were any criticism to levy against We’re Impostors: Kill Together, it would lie in the occasional frustration of coordinating between Impostors. It can be difficult to trust one’s fellow Impostors, and at times you may find yourself forced to go against your instincts in support of your fellow saboteurs – for better or for worse. However, this tension is integral to the game’s overall experience and serves to bring the relationships between Impostors to life.
In conclusion, We’re Impostors: Kill Together is a devilishly delightful game that masterfully combines social deduction elements with a fresh twist on teamwork and betrayal. The expertly crafted gameplay mechanics, aesthetic charm, and dedication to improvement by its developers make it a must-play game for fans of this genre. With that said, gather your friends, embrace your inner traitor, and embark on a thrilling, cutthroat adventure full of laughter, excitement, and nail-biting tension.
