Editor's Review

Jump into the dandy world of Sonic Rumble, a fast-paced multiplayer brawler that combines the speed of the Sonic The Hedgehog series with the mayhem of a party game. This title, created by SEGA in conjunction with Rovio Entertainment, places 32 players inside a toy-based arena where only one can rise to the top, or more accurately, be the last player standing with the most golden rings.

The game's genius is in its accessibility. Casual and deep controls. Movement is controlled via a virtual joystick, with buttons for jumping, attacking and activating abilities ensuring an uncluttered interface. Returning players will recognize Sonic's classic moves and the ability to use the homing attack and spin dash as they compete with friends in multiplayer action.

The secret weapon of Sonic Rumble is its stage diversity. Each map, from neon-soaked cities to labyrinthine toy factories, has plenty of routes to take, encouraging exploration. Among them is Cloud Kingdom, where bouncy green platforms send players pinging to hidden ring stashes, in a nod to risk-takers who leap. Pokesonic fares a little better in the nostalgia factor, with some side-scrolling 2D action amidst falling platforms in Lava Mountain. The developers even throw curve balls, one round could see teams cooperating to take down a robot boss, while another throws relentless, screen-filling meat mechs at players. This randomness keeps matches feeling fresh, even after dozens of playthroughs.

Progress is bound to a hefty seasonal mode. Crates for daily logins, challenges and a battle pass, cover the player characters in cosmetics, skins, emotes, victory animations, that let players personalize their avatars. Crossover events with other SEGA series such as Altered Beast or Super Monkey Ball bridge in guest characters with their own unique abilities as well, but these are typically event-bound. The monetization, although present, is not the gate-keeping the core gameplay, rings earned in-match can be used to unlock characters and items, though more impatient players can buy them with microtransactions.

Critics note a few quirks. Third round fixation on head-to-head PvP can get old, and the lack of a traditional, winner's-circle cutscene (a staple in any battle royale) feels like a missed opportunity for moment-shaping hype. In addition, the ring-based economy while interesting can discourage aggressive play, if you're ahead you become a target, and eventually it pays to stop trying to win and simply to stave off losing.

However, the appeal to Sonic Rumble far outnumber its negative points. Cross platform play, effortless on mobile, PC, and consoles, ensures games start quickly, and 3-5 minute rounds slot into the fleeting moments between quick gaming sessions. The art style, a heady mix of retro SEGA and contemporary polish, pops on screens of all sizes. And for longtime fans, there was the nostalgia of the splashy sound effects, the ding of a gathered ring, the cha-ching of the winning strike, calls forth a wonderful pang of nostalgia.

In a genre crowded with copycats, Sonic Rumble shines by embracing what has always made Sonic an icon, speed, style, and a side of mischief. Whether you're a casual player in the mood for a chaotic good time, or a competitive gamer seeking to perfect your ring-stealing techniques, the blue blur's most recent adventure is a wild and entertaining ride worth taking. Just be careful around those spring-loaded traps, and your rivals' homing attacks.
