A new spin-off from a game franchise that has crossed 3 billion downloads worldwide faces big expectations. Angry Birds Families — developed and published by Finnish developer Rovio Entertainment, no less — is one of those titles that hammers a unique nail into the wall of the Angry Birds world. The next evolution of this no-brainer mobile slingshot puzzle game takes a new flock and passes along some very special bird-flinging business inheriting what makes Angry Birds an international sensation.
Angry Birds Families keeps to what fans love; the addictive and satisfying slingshot-based physics mechanic. In the game players catapult birds from a slingshot to demolish various structures and get rid of those greedy green pigs. Every bird has unique abilities — the Red packs a pound for another box of crumbs, the Blues will break into three smaller identically-endowed birds if pushed to it, while Yellow can zoom in with an extra jolt on him — and determining which bird is called upon during those piggy defenses is essential action-time. Hundreds of hand-crafted levels filled with challenges, secrets, and multi-stage puzzles await players returning for more.
The game is distinctive for its community-focused approach. The game focuses on connection — play with your friends or get in a clan and participate every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday when the tournaments reset. The bite-sized sessions mean if you have five minutes or an hour it'll fit right in the middle of a commute, lunch break and late-night puzzle marathons.
Angry Birds Families is not a vacuum. Its a spin-off franchise from an enormous media empire created by designer Jaakko Iisalo and now owned, since 2023 also in the board game industry along with Rovio (who are long gone), to Sega. The property has also spread far beyond the confines of palm-sized mobile screens: animated series Angry Birds Toons and Piggy Tales, two theatrical films (in 2016 The Angry Birds Movie followed by a sequel released in 2019), and an additional third film slated for release in 2026. Spin-off titles have varied from racing games to role-playing games (RPG) such as Angry Birds Evolution on Apple Arcade; and bubble-shooters like Angry Birds POP! and Angry Birds Dream Blast.
The game is rated E for Everyone, although parents should be forewarned that the humour in this franchise does dip to low-brow — as one reviewer puts it "if you don't want your son telling butthole jokes six months from now pick this up. For everyone else, an easy to pick up puzzle experience that offers great rewards in a fun and accessible package for both casual players just trying to solve the puzzles as well completionists hunting down those three stars.
In short, the birds might have lost the battle against pigs 17 years ago but they clearly haven't run out of puff yet with their latest expansion spawning on Google Play and the App Store. Life's no cakewalk as you get your hands on a slingshot — the pigs won't beat themselves.
