Editor's Review

The horror genre has always intrigued me, and playing a spooky video game is always a thrilling experience. When I first discovered Five Nights at Freddy’s (FNAF) a few years ago, I was absolutely terrified by its intense gameplay and creepy ambiance. With the release of the latest installment in the series, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted (HW), created by Steel Wool Studios and released on October 26, 2020, I felt it was my duty to try it out and share my thoughts with fellow horror game enthusiasts.

First of all, speaking of the graphics and visuals, one of the most significant upgrades in this new edition of FNAF is the improved visual quality. I was genuinely impressed with the level of detail and character design in the game, which was not only immersive but also added an extra layer of scare factor. The atmospheric lighting and grittier texture enhance the experience exponentially.

Not only that but Five Nights at Freddy’s: HW offers a generous and diverse array of gameplay modes, including selecting some of the best classic FNAF levels from previous games and slightly modifying them for a refreshed experience. Apart from the familiar experiences, HW’s gameplay also features some brand-new mini-games within its virtual world. For instance, vent repair tasks and defending against an onslaught of animatronic mascots are challenging tasks that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

One of the standout features in HW is the opportunity to grab, hold and interact with objects, thanks to how the gameplay has adapted to VR. This function adds an extra dimension of challenge and immersion to the game. Moreover, there are several collectibles like coins, tapes, and other objects you can discover that provide access to hidden lore and information. This, alongside a touch of humor in some of the levels, adds depth and variety to the game, keeping the experience engaging and fresh.

While not a compulsory feature, Five Nights at Freddy’s: HW can also be played in VR, which further enhances the game’s immersion. The ability to look around and examine every corner of the room only heightened my sense of dread and vulnerability, thus making the gameplay even scarier. A significant advantage of the VR experience is the more realistic interaction with the objects, which adds a layer of authenticity to your surroundings.

When it comes to the story and characters, though story development is a consistent feature in the FNAF series, Five Nights at Freddy’s: HW treats the player to pieces of information about the game’s universe without feeling dragged down by an overarching plot. Easter eggs, hidden tapes, and other collectibles aid in uncovering the lore throughout the game.

The infamous Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica, and Foxy all return in their horrifying forms, along with several new additions to the animatronic roster. Each character is unique in their design, movements, and scares – making encounters unpredictable and terrifying during gameplay.

More importantly, one of FNAF’s signature elements is its spine-chilling audio. Five Nights at Freddy’s: HW is no exception, with perfectly designed audio cues that keep you on your toes. The slightest sound can make a world of difference in this game, and being able to hear the animatronics approach can mean the difference between life and death. The music and ambient sounds throughout the game also elevate the overall eerie and creepy atmosphere – something FNAF fans will undoubtedly appreciate.

In conclusion, Five Nights at Freddy’s: Help Wanted is an excellent addition to the FNAF franchise, keeping its core elements intact while adding fresh gameplay features to cater to both seasoned fans and newcomers. The improved graphics, engaging mini-games, and incorporation of VR make for a truly haunting experience that will have players wheezing and jumping from their seats. Just when you thought you had seen it all from this horror franchise, Steel Wool Studios have brought us a terrifyingly immersive experience that is bound to leave you feeling awestruck and possibly sleepless.
