Editor's Review

Angry Birds Hatchlings is a match-3 puzzle game developed by Rovio Entertainment. Instead of the classic slingshot gameplay that has made this franchise beloved for so many years, it literally fuses tile-matching gameplay with our favorite Angry Birds characters. It is not too far-fetched as the game comes with more than 1000 different levels to complete delivering a unique and diverse gaming experience.

Arguably, the most immediately apparent feature of Angry Birds Hatchlings is its lovely and upbeat art style. It has the classic Angry Birds cartoon art style, familiar with its charming hatchlings and multi-color characters to attract young players as well. The mischievous aesthetics and dynamic animations set a playful tone that makes each segment feel both interesting and fun. Plus, it features some unique gameplay mechanics that differentiate the adventure from other match-3 games. Link 4 or more and you can unleash the big three heroes Angry Birds; Red, Chuck and Bomb who each do special powers to complete levels. Bomb wipes out one column or row, Chuck fans out in four directions and Bomb blasts across three columns or rows – which is what makes the puzzle-solving experience so strategically rewarding.

One of the big strengths that the game has, is its diverse objectives. Instead of just collecting a specific number like most match-3 games, Angry Birds Hatchlings also features varied objectives: rescuing ducks, picking up food and cupcakes, destroying objects in the environment (a popular feature for any mobile game), defeating pigs (special green ones abound!), launching birds into baskets all this while spreading grass across levels! Even King Pig Leonard can be defeated! That variety ensures gameplay never becomes stale, which helps push players to advance through literally hundreds of single player levels. In terms of expansion, the game has unlockables including The Blues and various hatchlings along with supportive characters in Matilda and Mighty Eagle which gives replayability.

Unfortunately, Angry Birds Hatchlings also has an issue that may sharply divide players as well: it is pretty heavily tied to microtransactions and in-app purchases if you want an easy ride of it. It is based on the typical free-to-play mobile format of being move-based, where there are a finite number of moves allowed per level; when you run out it can entail waiting (think lives/continues) or paying Top Dollar. This can also lead to a pay-to-win dynamic where players unwilling or unable to spend money may be stymied for long intervals at certain levels. This monetization model detracts from the otherwise alluring experience, particularly for players who want a more straightforward skill-based challenge rather than being prompted to buy additional moves or boosters on their way out of phase 1.

Overall, Angry Birds Hatchlings is a lovely introduction to the world of Epic Angry Birds and would successfully transfer these characters into just about any format — especially if that happens to be match-3 puzzle game. The colorful graphics, varied objectives and unique bird traits that all come together to make a fun game while providing game players with hours of both casual and dedicated gameplay. Although the much reliance on micro transactions and move limitations can sour, Angry Birds Hatchlings still has a level of charm (and assortment) that makes it at least worth checking out for fans of puzzle games or anyone with an investment in the Angry Birds universe. If you're on a trip back to Piggy Island or want another Match-3, Angry Birds Hatchlings should give you something to chow down.
